Mosquito Species in Thailand
Thailand is home to numerous mosquito species, with Aedes aegypti (the yellow fever mosquito) and Aedes albopictus (the Asian tiger mosquito) being the most concerning as they transmit dengue fever, Zika virus, and chikungunya. Anopheles mosquitoes, which transmit malaria, are present in rural and forested areas. Culex mosquitoes, which can transmit Japanese encephalitis and filariasis, breed in polluted water sources and are common in urban areas.
Mosquito Life Cycle
Mosquitoes undergo complete metamorphosis with four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Female mosquitoes lay eggs in or near water, and depending on the species, eggs can be laid individually or in rafts. The eggs hatch into larvae (wrigglers) that live in water but breathe air through a tube. After molting several times, larvae develop into pupae (tumblers), which don't feed but remain active. Adults emerge from the pupal case after 1-4 days. The entire lifecycle from egg to adult can take as little as 7-10 days in warm weather.
